Vancouver Opera New Works Project 2018

I wrote librettos for two one-act operas, as part of the Vancouver Opera's New Works Project. The project combined the talents of six UBC students from Composition, Creative Writing and Opera Performance to create short new works in three weeks, which were performed at the 2018 Vancouver Opera Festival.

"Vegetables" is a comedy about a quarrelsome couple who wake up one day to find that they have transformed into vegetables. This surreal situation pushes them to come to terms with their stagnant relationship.

Composed by Roan Shankaruk. Performed by Alireza Mojibian (Cauliflower Husband) and Amanda Yi-Wen Na (Onion Wife). Due to time constraints, the performers were only able to perform half of the opera in the video below.

"Consumed" is a fairy-tale tragedy about Mirae, a girl with low self-esteem who is smitten with a boy named Arta. She falls prey to a sinister magic mirror who gradually tempts her with images of Arta, luring her to self-hate, obsession and demise.
